Campaign: Dungeon
A dungeon campaign takes place entirely in a single location, often underground, in a maze, a dungeon, or a series of tunnels. The group of adventurers usually have a clear goal, be it finding a treasure, defeating a powerful foe, or something more complexe or interesting, like the answer to a long enduring mystery. The campaign takes the shape of a series of encounters, with NPC, monsters, puzzles, traps, and locations.
The following are elements to take in consideration when planning such a campaign.
- Interesting setting: The location of the dungeon, and its history, or significance in the larger world, can help make the campaign more interesting.
- Challenging combats: Regular and diversified fights are a must in this type of campaign.
- Role-playing encounters: Opportunities to role-play should be spread out throughout the campaign.
- Preparations: Because the party will probably not have the chance to rest at an inn, or buy equipment at shops, it should well prepared to spend many days in an enclosed space.
- Riddles and puzzles: Making the party think and solve puzzles is another good way to vary the content of the dungeon.
- Common theme: Using a theme throughout the campaign can help create an ambiance or feel.
- Traps and surprises: Making each location unpredictable by including traps and surprises is a good way to make sure the party is always on their guard.
- Useful treasures: There needs to be a progression throughout the campaign, and finding items that can later be used in the campaign, or that strengthens the party, is a good way to keep the players motivated.
- Strong conclusion: The campaign needs to ends on a strong note, with a special encounter, be it a monster, a special location, or finding the answer to a question.
