Wolf's Steep

Wolf's Steep is a traditional hot drink originating from the city of Wolf, a port city on the northern coast of Istagon. Brewed from dried white pine needles and wiseberries — both harvested from the forests and hillsides of the northern coast — it has long been a staple of the city's sailors, traders, and travellers, valued as much for its warming qualities as for its distinctive flavour.

The drink is prepared by steeping a small handful of dried pine needles and crushed wiseberries in hot water, producing a brew that is sharp and slightly resinous, with a dark tartness from the berries and a clean, almost citrusy edge from the pine. The smell alone — cold forest air and wild fruit — is enough to conjure the northern coast for anyone who has spent time there. Locals drink it through the long winter months, and travellers from Wolf are known to carry small pouches of the dried mixture with them on the road, a piece of home that weighs almost nothing and keeps indefinitely.
